The Global Health Body Issues Warning Over Critical Scarcity of Weight-Loss Jabs

Fewer than a tenth of individuals who could benefit from obesity jabs including Wegovy are able to get them, warns the WHO as it releases its initial recommendations on the medications.

Given in excess of 1,000,000,000 individuals worldwide currently classified as obese, it is urging broader and more equitable access to these injectable treatments.

Per estimates, in excess of 2,000,000,000 are projected to be living with obesity by 2030 without intervention.

"Our new guidance affirms that obesity is a long-term condition that can be treated with thorough and continuous support," remarked its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, insufficient output, and distribution challenges are major hurdles to universal access to the injections that can assist patients in reducing significant body mass, notes the agency.

GLP-1 Therapy Scarcity

Despite the current best projected case, the manufacturing of such drugs might only reach about 100 million people – under 10% of eligible patients, according to the health organization.

The recommendation calls on nations and manufacturers to expand access, by approaches including voluntary licensing.

The intellectual property rights on a key compound – the main ingredient of Novo Nordisk's Wegovy – is scheduled to end in a number of countries in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Injections Operate

The injections imitate a natural hormone to reduce digestion speed, reduce hunger and increase the sense of being full so users consume fewer calories.

People usually see weight reduction after several weeks of commencing the weekly injections.

Evidence suggests patients may see weight return a year later of stopping the medication, as their usual food cravings return.

Being carrying excess weight elevates your likelihood for developing medical conditions, like diabetes, heart disease, brain attack, and some malignancies.

Excess weight concerns people in every country and was linked to millions of deaths worldwide in 2024, according to the WHO.
